There are several private and voluntary clubs gyms and swimming pools including Total Fitness and the David Lloyd Tennis and Leisure Centre, along with a number of public recreation centres (six being Target Fitness Centres) and swimming pools, managed on behalf of the Council by Stockport Sports Trust, a registered charity

From the legendary tennis star Fred Perry to Commonwealth Games swimming gold medallist James Goddard, Stockport's sporting connections are numerous.Each year Stockport County Football Club takes Stockport's name nationwide.

Sale Sharks, one of the UK's leading Rugby Union sides play in Stockport and share Edgeley Park with Stockport County. The re-nowned Stockport Metro Swimming Club and the borough's lacrosse players are amongst leading sports achievers.
