Stockport Covered Market Hall Grand Opening

A 'VICTORIAN EXTRAVANGANZA`
SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2008

The Final Phase of Stockport's Covered Market Hall will be unveiled to the public on
Saturday 29 November in style with a huge FREE Victorian themed Grand Opening event
to celebrate the occasion.

Image of entertainersAfter an investment of £1.7 million from the Council and Heritage Lottery Fund, the restoration project will transform the historic Covered Market Hall back to it's former glory with the addition of the latest innovative features, including a flagstone floor with an under floor heating system, an open community space for events and an Heritage interpretation board and listening post. One side of the Hall will also be opened up to provide new serving hatches to allow trading directly onto the street, with awnings above to shelter customers.

The Victorian Extravaganza event will run from 10.30am to 4.30pm around the Market Place, on Warren St, Bridge St and Great Underbank. With a huge array of entertainment in celebration of the renovation work and the Victorian Grade II listed building. There will be a Free Victorian Fun Fair, with stalls you can have a go at such as Tin Can Alley and Roll a Penny, test your Strength strikers and beautiful 30ft long Swing Boats for children and big children.

Barrel Organ music will be heard throughout the streets, the smell of hot chestnuts and mulled wine arousing the senses, plus the aroma of burning coal, which will fire an 1876 Vintage Fire Appliance from Cheshire Fire Service.

There will be fantastic community performances by the Stockport Morris Men, Mill Town Cloggies, Fidler's Fancy, Adlington Morris Men and Liberty Belles. Victorian costume walkabouts from Stockport Heritage Trust and from a giant Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson securitising your every move. Traditional shows and music performed by the very talented NK Theatre Arts, including songs from `My Fair Lady`, `Scrooge` and `Half a Sixpence`. Not to be missed is the Manchester Bach Choir who will be performing in the evening at St Mary's Church, will be singing on the steps of St Mary's.  Plus for one day only, Father Christmas will be in his log cabin grotto.

For this and much, much more, make a date in your diary to see the wonderful transformed Covered Market Hall plus the opportunity to buy goods from Stockport's friendly Market Traders!
