Paintings from Stockport’s art collection
Enjoy a time out from the daily grind by taking in the tranquillity portrayed in this exhibition of landscape painting. Landscapes were extremely popular during the Victorian era when towns like Stockport were becoming increasingly industrialised. Artists loved painting them, collectors loved collecting them and gallery visitors loved viewing them. Perhaps it was the feeling of escaping to the country that appealed when all that could be seen in the townscape were factories with chimneys billowing smoke.

Beneath and Beyond: landscape paintings by Kate Davies
Sat 21 January - Sunday 4 March
Kate Davies is a Manchester based painter whose work is both evocative and compelling.
Her recent works deal with the experience of being in the countryside, the tangle and mud underfoot, and the sublime glimpses of changing light and distant spaces. The processes of painting, layering, washing, dribbling etc. echo the processes at work in nature, but with hints and glimpses of observed realities in her use of collaged fragments of photographs.
These fragments reflect something of the complex way in which we form perceptions with half remembered details of sharp focus. Sometimes there are figures in the landscape, at other times merely traces of human presence, (tracks, fences, litter, etc.). These are paintings which look for beauty in the unexpected, the ordinary and the overlooked. This exhibition brings together a large body of work from this prolific artist.
