Stockport Market Goes Medieval
Stockport Council is topping off Stockport Market’s 750 anniversary celebrations in style with a grand finale weekend on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October.
Visitors are encouraged to join the celebrations by heading to Stockport Market to re-live the historic St. Wilfrid’s Medieval Fair. Stockport Council has resurrected this centuries old tradition of medieval mayhem and merriment with two days of FREE events.
On Saturday 23rd October between 10am until 4pm visitors can enjoy St. Wilfrid’s Medieval Market. Intertwined amongst Stockport’s traditional street market will be strolling performances and thrilling shows including magic, falconry, knights, music, a jaw-dropping bed of nails show and the occasional public execution. Spectators will also be able to watch a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ stage show with an 8ft guillotine, amazing tricks with coins, cards, cups, rope and a fascinating demonstration of medieval street swindles.
On Sunday 24th October from 12.30pm till late people will be able to experience St. Wilfrid’s interactive Medieval village and fire show. The event includes authentic characters in a living history encampment which will show visitors how to strike a coin, make remedies using medicines, herbs and potions and demonstrate traditional weaving and weaponry.
The medieval celebration will culminate in a parade followed by a stunning fire show which will be choreographed to music that will illuminate the market place. Jets of flames will delight and amaze, creating an unmissable finale to Stockport Market’s 750th anniversary.
Also on the programme is The Plantagenet Society re-enactment group who will be on hand to educate and entertain with drama, humour and audience participation. For the brave, there will be a tournament of fully-armoured knights in battle, whilst the more sedate can enjoy squire training, try their hand at archery, create a beautiful brass and watch medieval dancing. Music will be provided from Dante Ferrara and the Brandywine Bridge duo who specialise in romantic and bawdy songs and play a range of period instruments. A performing jester will also charm the audience with tunes, songs and traditional tales, and visitors are urged to look out for the ferocious 14ft smoke-breathing dragon.
Cllr John Smith, Executive Member for Leisure said: “I sincerely encourage everyone to come along and experience what Stockport may have been like in medieval times. This fun and fascinating event is a fitting finale to the celebrations of this landmark anniversary. I hope that it will serve to remind people of the important a role that the market has played in the town’s history and how it continues to serve the local community today and into the future.”
Throughout the finale weekend Staircase House will offer special admission at only £2.00 per person. Resident’s have an opportunity to see the beautifully restored town house with its famous Jacobean cage-newel staircase.

The vegetarian option must include the new ‘Stockport Cheshire Cheese’ that is being launched by the Council in honour of the Market anniversary. The cheese was supplied free to all competitors courtesy of Reece’s Dairies, who will also be demonstrating the versatility of the Stockport Cheshire in the Covered Market Hall the night before the Grand Final.
