Stockport Market is resurrecting the centuries old tradition of St Wilfrid’s Fair. Be transported back to medieval times with wandering knights from the Plantagenet Society, jesters and a jaw dropping bed of nails show

At a glance:

  • Children's Castle Painting Activity, drop in, drop out in the Covered Market Hall. Children can get crafty and take a paint pallet to a giant cardboard castle.
  • Nathaniel Bagshot ye Magician presents his much acclaimed stage show Bagshot's Cabinet of Curiosities which also involves a mind-reading mouse and an eight foot guillotine. Including demonstrations of close-up sleight of hand with coins, cards, cups and bits of rope and fascinating demonstration of medieval street swindles.
  • Peter Optical is multi-talented medieval entertainer whose skills include stilt walking, juggling, fire eating, traditional music and storytelling.
  • Internally acclaimed The Court Jesters, are true to tradition with plenty of verbal wit, tomfoolery, this lively duo have played the fool all over the World.
  • The Black Guide is your Medieval Executioner undertaking talks on the would be the role of public executioner and the perks of the job then explaining the tools of my trade including brand any thieves and unlicensed beggars at the market and using the cat o nine tails to keep order and silence nagging housewives!
  • What a Palaver a duo of Medieval Street Entertainers undertake a jaw dropping show with a large bed of nails and fire show.
  • There will be memorising Music from the Brandywine Bridge Duo specialises in romantic and bawdy songs playing a dazzling array of beautiful period instruments.

Sunday 24 October
12.30pm - 6.30pm
Stockport Market Place

Enjoy a glimpse into medieval life. The day promises armoured knights, storytelling, musicians and dancers. Don’t miss the ferocious 14ft smoke-breathing dragon.  The fearless can try their hand at archery or train with a sword and axe. The day will end with a spectacular fire finale.

The Plantagenet Society are coming to Stockport! This renactment group have been thrilling, educating and entertaining audiences across the UK and internationally for over thirty years. With their engaging and unique blend of drama, humour and audience involvement,
There will be a thrilling tournament of fully-armoured knights in battle For brave audiences, there will be Squire training, or an opportunity to try your hand at archery or for the more relaxing, create a beautiful brass or watch graceful dancing

  • There will be memorising Music from Dante Ferrara and the Brandywine Bridge Duo again, specialising in romantic and bawdy songs playing a dazzling array of beautiful period instruments.
  • Sylvester the Jester is a seasoned performer of jolly capers. A ye fine musician and singer of old ballads, regaling his audiences whilst strumming and plucking his mandola including songs, music, jokes and stories.
  • A living History encampment and authentic traders awaits you with an array of Medieval Characters pedalling their wares and informing visitors on the days medicine, herbs and potions, through weaving and weaponry. 
  • Visitors can have a go at Archery in St Mary's Church yard from 1.30pm. Children can undertake brass rubbings with the Plantagenet Society too.

Fire Show Finale

As the evening draws to a close, the Medieval Parade will begin; culminating in an amazing dance of fire choreographed to music that will illuminate the Market Place. The jets of flames will delight and amaze, as they leap and twist creating an unmissable finale from approximately 6 pm.
